As the on‐dock volumes increase, there will be an increase in demand for both on‐dock capacity and supporting rail facilities, which the existing Pier B Rail Yard, without the expansion, would not be able to handle effectively. The proposed project will realign Pier B Street and Pico Avenue to accommodate new yard tracks. The new yard track will provide increased railcar storage and staging capacity, including 10,000‐foot staging tracks to facilitate more efficient assembly of trains. The project will construct approximately 80,000 feet of new trackage at the Pier B Rail Yard to allow inbound and outbound intermodal trains to be staged at Pier B and will provide vital storage tracks for empty rail cars required to support on‐dock intermodal operations. The project will also include the relocation of approximately 1,000 utility lines within the project footprint. The estimated construction cost of the project is approximately $640 Million.
PORT OF LONG BEACH – PIER D STREET REALIGNMENT PROJECT, LONG BEACH, CA
Pier D Street is a local street connecting Pico Avenue to Pier D Terminal area. The street consists of single easterly bound lane and westerly bound lane with no sidewalk and merely dirt shoulders. It serves as sole ingress and egress for Pier D terminal area. In order to accommodate the anticipated increase in truck traffic generated from Long Beach Container Terminal Long (LBCT) North Gate access while maintaining existing traffic flow capacity based on the latest traffic flow study, Pier D Street requires adding additional traffic lanes to meet the demand. In addition, the Project will address the reported seasonal flooding of the street which remains a traffic hazard and continues to worsen the traffic congestion; relocate and upgrade a stormwater pump station on Pier D Street; and upgrade and/or modify an existing sanitary sewer lift station adjacent to the project area.
